Mayakoba Championship 2021

Stats, Trends & Things You Don't Need To Know

Course: El Camaleon GCPar 71 - 7,017YardsPaspalum Greens

The Paspalum Problem

This week’s greens are paspalum, a unique a wide-blade type of grass. Generally we find this type of grass near the shore or in places where salt water could impact the integrity of the putting surfaces.

It can be found elsewhere on TOUR at the Puerto Rico Open and Corales Puntacana Championship. The problem is that those events also don’t have ShotLink data so we don’t know who the ā€œbest puttersā€ are.

Now, the general consensus is that this type of grass normally has to run slower because of the proximity to the shoreline and that the wide blade is better for below-average putters.

Even without the Strokes Gained breakdown, we can start to assemble the pieces of the puzzle by looking at overall results on this type of surface. Which brings us to…

Grillo The GOATo

Whether this surface fixes the putter or not, one thing is clear — Emiliano Grillo is excellent on paspalum. He’s played on this surface ten times. He’s never missed the cut. He’s gaining strokes on the field in all of them. He has (7) Top 11 finishes.

Find The Fairway

El Camaleon ain’t so bad … if you’re playing out of the fairway. In fact, Driving Accuracy is one of the most closely correlated stats to success at this course over the last dozen years. There are only three Golfers in the field who have hit 66%+ of fairways and are gaining 1+ stroke per round — over their last 50 rounds:

(That’s Abraham Ancer, Viktor Hovland and Aaron Wise for you playing at home)

Speaking of Viktor

Here’s my chance to dive into some self-promotion. I had Viktor on my podcast last week and we spoke about a variety of topics, including his mindset leading into his Title Defense this week.Watch: https://bit.ly/3w92TDfListen: https://bit.ly/3BECkqH

Leave Some Cash On The Table

Every single week I share the optimal lineup for the tournament that just ended. Every single week, it leaves multiple hundreds of dollars on the table. Last week’s optimal cost $49,500.

Of the Top 150 Most Optimal Lineups

  • 3 cost $50,000

  • 3 cost $49,900

  • 4 cost $49,800

  • 1 cost $49,700

  • 139 cost $49,600 or less

King Power

I’m really leaning into ā€œFantasy Points Gainedā€ (FPG) for DFS purposes. At the end of the day, it’s a fantasy point game and maybe that’s what we should be looking at! FPG works just like Strokes Gained. You take the average Fantasy Points scored by the field each week, if a golfer does better — he gains. If he does worse — he loses. Simple.

The FPG King is Seamus Power. He’s gaining 21.2 points to the field in 2021, the most of anyone in this field with at least four starts.
