The Data Behind Captain Selections | (#203)

š¢ Fore, Pleaseā¦
Greetings from the Big Apple. This will be my second Ryder Cup but first in America so Iām really excited to see how the atmosphere differs from Rome.
Since this event doesnāt start until Friday morning and I want to download as much information as possible, our Live Chat this week will be Thursday at 7PM ET.
We should know the morning pairings by then and Iāll have logged thousands of steps around Bethpage Black. See you there.
Enjoy,
Rick
š Europe Runs Wild
During the year approximately 90% of the content that I create expires within a day or two. When I create a preview video for the Sanderson Farms on Monday, itās basically useless on Thursday morning. The Live Chats ā even shorter.
Iāve always wanted to carve out some time and resources to dive into some topics that are bigger than whatever is going to happen in the next few days.
Thatās the genesis of my partnership with Skratch who is giving me the resources and the platform to dive into those topics.
First topic ā Ryder Cup Wild Cards and why Europe is so much better at getting them right than the Americans.
š« No Rookie Zone
There is a lot of chatter that the United States team will be sitting all of their Ryder Cup Rookies for the first session on Friday Morning. I personally think that would be a big mistake but if itās true, we are setting up for alternate shot teams that look something like:
Scheffler & English
Cantlay & Schauffele
DeChambeau & Thomas
Morikawa & Burns
Again, this is speculative but feels less than ideal.
Not only have Scheffler & Henley forged a formidable pairing but Spaun, Griffin, and Young are some of the better players on this squad! Riding the pine for ⦠what reason? Potential nerves?
šŖ The Picks To Click
I donāt like the practice of sharing my betting card ā because it shouldnāt matter to you. We have different objectives, risk tolerances, bankrolls, etc. But ā itās the Ryder Cup. Letās get freaky. I also think itās a good way to start a discussion and provide analysis. I encourage you to disagree with me and make your own decisions.
There are a few of the wagers Iāve already made this week.
JJ Spaun 2+ Points (+110)
I made this bet before the rumor about rookies sitting out the first session. Either way, I still think Spaun catches a match with Scottie. I also donāt think the course is going to be a problem (remember Oakmont) and he has two very strong match play skills in driving accuracy and putting.
Viktor Hovland over Russell Henley (Total Points) (+100)
This one I did make after the rookie rumor. I think thereās a really good chance that Hovland plays all five sessions ā as he has in each of the last two Ryder Cups. If things fall perfectly for this bet, Hovland plays five sessions and Henley plays three. Even if they both end up playing four, I think this is a really solid wager considering Hovland might be in a power pairing with Aberg at some point.
Scottie Scheffler Out First In Sunday Singles (+150)
This one is dependent on how the event plays out, but if Europe is winning going into Sunday OR itās close, Scheffler has to go out first. The gap between him and everyone else on the American team (and world) is too big. You cannot possibly risk his match not mattering. You also can use him for early momentum. The only chance he doesnāt go out first is if the Americans have a big lead going into Sunday and he gets placed 3rd or 4th in that prime āwinning point spotā.
